2016 General Artist Statement
Predominantly painting, my work has fluctuated between the completely abstract and the more representational. I am involved with composing layered transparent and opaque painted surfaces and images. The contrast of flatness with the illusion of space holds my attention as an essential aspect of painting and all two-dimensional work. Layering seems to be time related, referring to memory and experience, and the complexity of perception.
My process of painting echoes the metaphor at the chore of chaos dynamics, that of (re)iteration and manipulation of materials. In the figure/ground relationship, elements are bound to each other in a self-contained whole where everything is connected. There are links to the dichotomies of nature/nurture, wild/tame, sacred/profane, harmony and opposition, the organic and manufactured.
The main focus is painting as painting, exploring the picture plane and space/depth in a challenging way. I paint to see how it will look and then carry on to make it look better. My ideal painting is slow, it reveals itself over time and becomes a vehicle for reflection.
