2016 Colour Blocking exhibition - Artist Statement
(Two person show with Gary Michael Dault.)
The thing about three-dimensional objects is that they look different from each side, so they change as you move around them and you have to remember what you saw before to retain a picture in your mind of the whole thing. In that sense, sculpture is actually interactive time-based art.
Colours are like people, they have quite distinct personalities that you can get to know quite well. Then you place one next to another so they interact and other aspects of each personality appear, they change each other by their proximity. Add to this a difference in size, making colours appear bolder or more bland than they looked before, and you have changes in all the relationships. The patterns of visual behavior get more and more complex.
It is these perceptions that I am playing with when I make and rearrange my crowds of coloured boxes and beams. In one of my two installations there are 71 cardboard boxes, in a range of sizes and about 30 different colours
