2014 Artist Statement

In my pictures these days I am interested in making many different, often opposing, factors exist together in the same space, literally and figuratively.
I make the choice of working with abstraction so the work itself is seen instead of some object previously known and recognized by the viewer. This is because there is a tendency for such recognition to act as a barrier to the completely open looking that I prefer. The materials I use and their diverse qualities are very important.
Usually my ideas build on previous work with a clear line going back for about 50 years. I am concerned with the realities of human perception, binary configurations, and chaos dynamics. There are influences from places visited and people who may be writers, philosophers, musicians and artists, of the past or living in the present. The passing of time and its relation to space is always implied.
The ongoing consistency of my experience is a factor in parallel to my ambition to make something never before seen. I look to be surprised and do the work to see what it will look like. Then I hope that it will be enjoyed by other people.
