1973 Edmonton Art Gallery exhibition: Hendrik Bres, Ann Clarke Darrah, Eva Deiner.
Statement for catalogue of exhibition.
“I have involvements which can be rationalized and described –
what I can do with canvas,
what I can do with paint.
- nature of canvas, a neutral, flat, firm surface which can become full and soft or slack and hanging. The paint lies on the surface, flows across it, or soaks in and becomes an integral quality of the surface.
Modulation of the surface with successive washes of close-toned hues – concept of painting as object – its identity and reality as a presence.
“One really finds light best in the darkness”. There is nothing I know for sure about except my own existence and mortality – understanding the unknowable, exploring the intensity which is at once the speed and substance of thought.
The necessity for dream is more essential than any other more obvious need.
A painting creates information – also transmits information, but here the manner of transmission creates information as well as transmits it.”
